COLLAGEN INDUCTION THERAPY

Collagen induction therapy, also known as microneedling, is a minimally invasive skin treatment that uses a device with very fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries within the skin. These tiny channels stimulate the skin’s natural repair processes and can encourage the production of collagen and elastin, helping to improve the overall appearance and quality of the skin. At ELIA Clinic, your treatment is tailored to your skin type, concerns and desired outcome. The result is a gradual improvement in skin texture and quality rather than an immediate transformation.

Your skin may appear brighter and more refreshed once the initial redness has settled, but the deeper benefits develop gradually. Some clients may notice an improvement after one treatment, while a course of treatments is often recommended for concerns such as acne scarring, pigmentation or significant texture irregularities. Your treatment plan will be discussed during your consultation based on your skin and goals.

Microneedling FAQs

What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive skin treatment that uses a device with very fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries within the skin.

These tiny channels stimulate the skin’s natural repair processes and can encourage the production of collagen and elastin, helping to improve the overall appearance and quality of the skin.

At ELIA Clinic, your treatment is tailored to your skin type, concerns and desired outcome.

The microneedling device creates controlled micro-injuries in the skin.

This activates the body’s natural wound-healing response, which can stimulate collagen and elastin production as the skin repairs itself.

The result is a gradual improvement in skin texture and quality rather than an immediate transformation.

You may experience some mild discomfort, warmth or a prickling sensation during treatment. A topical numbing cream may be used where appropriate to make the treatment more comfortable. The level of sensitivity varies depending on the individual and the area being treated.

Microneedling can be used to improve the appearance of:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Enlarged pores
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Acne scarring
  • Certain types of pigmentation
  • Dull or tired-looking skin
  • Reduced skin firmness
  • Overall skin quality

Results vary depending on the condition of your skin, the depth and protocol used, and your individual response to treatment.

Microneedling typically involves some temporary redness and sensitivity afterwards.

Depending on the intensity of treatment, you may also experience:

  • Mild swelling
  • Tightness
  • Dryness
  • Flaking or peeling
  • Increased sensitivity

These effects generally settle as the skin heals. Your practitioner will provide detailed aftercare instructions following your treatment.

Redness varies depending on the individual and the intensity of the treatment.

Many clients experience noticeable redness for around 48-72 hours, although mild sensitivity or dryness can last longer.

We recommend allowing your skin time to recover before using potentially irritating skincare or having other treatments.

This depends on what you’re hoping to treat.

Some clients may notice an improvement after one treatment, while a course of treatments is often recommended for concerns such as acne scarring, pigmentation or significant texture irregularities.

Your treatment plan will be discussed during your consultation based on your skin and goals.

Your skin may appear brighter and more refreshed once the initial redness has settled, but the deeper benefits develop gradually.

Because collagen production and skin remodelling take time, improvements in texture, firmness and scarring may become more noticeable over the following weeks and months.

Microneedling stimulates your own natural skin-repair processes, so results aren’t considered permanent. Your skin continues to age naturally, and factors such as sun exposure, lifestyle and skincare can influence your results.

Maintenance treatments may be recommended depending on your skin and long-term goals.

Microneedling can be an effective option for improving the appearance of certain types of acne scarring, particularly depressed or textured scars.

However, not every type of acne scar responds in the same way. Your skin will be assessed before treatment so we can determine whether microneedling is appropriate for you.

Microneedling may be incorporated into a treatment plan for certain pigmentation concerns, but the cause and type of pigmentation need to be assessed first.

Some pigmentation conditions can worsen following skin injury, particularly in individuals prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, so appropriate assessment and treatment planning are important.

No. Microneedling is generally not performed directly over active, inflamed or infected acne lesions. If you currently have active acne, we’ll assess your skin and may recommend treating the underlying acne first before considering microneedling.

Potentially, yes. Microneedling can form part of a wider skin-treatment plan.

However, what can safely be combined depends on the products used, your skin condition and the timing of your treatments.

We will advise you on appropriate combinations and spacing during your consultation.

Before your appointment:

  • Arrive with clean skin where possible.
  • Avoid using strong exfoliating or irritating skincare immediately before treatment unless advised otherwise.
  • Tell us about any medications, skincare products, allergies or previous treatments.
  • Inform us about any active skin conditions or infections.
  • Avoid treatment if you are unwell or have an active infection in the area being treated.

Your skin will be more sensitive immediately following treatment, so it’s important to follow your aftercare instructions.

You may be advised to avoid:

  • Direct sun exposure
  • Excessive heat
  • Saunas and steam rooms
  • Swimming
  • Heavy exercise immediately following treatment
  • Strong acids, retinoids and other potentially irritating skincare until your skin has recovered
  • Picking or exfoliating the treated area

Daily broad-spectrum SPF is particularly important while your skin is recovering.

No. Microneedling isn’t suitable for everyone.

Your suitability will be assessed before treatment. Active infections, certain inflammatory skin conditions, poor wound healing, some medications and other medical factors may mean treatment needs to be postponed or avoided.

If you’re unsure whether microneedling is appropriate for you, we’ll discuss this during your consultation.

Before Your Appointment

To help your appointment run smoothly and give you the best possible results, please read the following advice before you visit.

  • Come with your questions. Every appointment begins with a consultation, so bring any concerns you have and we’ll talk them through before anything goes ahead.
  • Tell us about any medications, skincare products, allergies or previous treatments.
  • Arrive with clean skin where possible, and avoid using strong exfoliating or irritating skincare immediately before treatment unless advised otherwise.
  • Inform us about any active skin conditions or infections.
  • Avoid treatment if you are unwell or have an active infection in the area being treated.
  • If you currently have active acne, we’ll assess your skin and may recommend treating the underlying acne first before considering microneedling.
  • If you’re prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, please let us know, as some pigmentation conditions can worsen following skin injury.
  • If you’re unsure whether microneedling is appropriate for you, we’ll discuss this during your consultation.

Above all, my aim is for your appointment to be a calm, comfortable and luxurious experience where you feel fully informed, relaxed and confident in your treatment.
